Heath took a swallow of breakfast coffee and stared down the main street. The aroma of his plate loaded with The Book Nook Café’s speciality bacon and eggs failed to entice him to eat.

Bundy had only been gone minutes and Heath already felt like something was missing. As hard as he stared, he could no longer see any flash of black and tan amongst the strolling locals rugged up against the morning chill. He’d always known Bundy would eventually have somewhere else to be but he’d become used to having the free-spirited kelpie around.

They’d been awake early and instead of painting in the studio they’d gone to Hawks Ridge to drench the cattle. Once they were done Bundy seemed restless and instead of coming inside the homestead to see his mother or Jasper, the kelpie had jumped onto the back of the Hilux. Heath had taken the cue that it was time to head to town for breakfast. But no sooner had he taken a seat outside the café than Bundy had licked his hand and loped away. Now here he sat with no Bundy to share his food with.

He again gazed at the empty street. It wasn’t only Bundy he was missing but also Clancy. His need to feel her softness and warmth against him had only intensified after their ride back from the hut. A lifetime of having her in his arms would never be enough. Yesterday in the cherry picker when the sun had picked out the copper highlights in her hair, he’d had to fist his hand against the urge to slide his fingers through the silken strands. It had been his lucky day that she’d been focused on the mural and not on him.

But as hard as it was, he had to remember all the reasons he’d come home. He hadn’t come back to Bundilla for her to discover his feelings or to disrupt her life. He was here to paint the mural and now help his parents.

He flipped up the collar of his coat against the brisk breeze before starting to eat. No wonder there were crocheted blankets on some chairs for patrons brave enough to sit outside before the sun radiated its warmth.

The vibration in his shirt pocket had him reach for his mobile. Clancy’s name illuminated the screen. Brow furrowed, he took the call. She usually only texted.

‘Hi Clance, everything okay?’

‘Yes, are you in town and is Bundy with you?’

The soft cadence of her voice washed across his senses. ‘As soon as we arrived he took off somewhere.’

‘Sorry, I meant to tell you yesterday. Every Thursday morning he’s a story dog.’

‘Story dog?’

‘He’s gone to school. He sits with the kids while they read. Everyone knows Thursday is Bundy’s day so they make sure he’s in town.’

‘Poor Bundy … no wonder he wanted to hurry up and get here. He disappeared this time last week, too.’

‘He’ll be fine. Hope you get lots done today.’

Now was the perfect place to end the conservation but in the not so distant future chatting like this with Clancy would be nothing but a memory.
