It didn’t matter that the croak of a frog from the depths of a hollow wooden fence post warned Rowan of rain when he fed Goliath his morning biscuit of hay. It didn’t matter that when he drove out Ashcroft’s front gate raindrops pelted his windscreen. And it didn’t matter that when he turned off the bitumen to drive to Crookwell Park the downpour was so heavy he couldn’t see the gravel road.

Even though it was a Thursday and a workday, he wasn’t going to finish off the final stones in the side wall. He was going to see Grace.

Rowan parked beside her car. Ever since she’d cried her heart out yesterday, he couldn’t relax. His body still remembered the feel of her in his arms. His lips still remembered the softness of her hair. And he still remembered how powerless he’d felt at not being able to ease her pain. Her sadness hadn’t only been from finding the heartbreaking contents of the trunks.

Grace’s strength humbled him. Her dignity awed him. She’d dealt with her grief head-on. There was no running away from her emotions like he had done. He scraped a hand over his face. There was so much he’d do differently if he had his time again.

He stared at the water streaming over the glass in front of him. After yesterday it was even more important that Grace be left in peace to continue to work through what she needed to. And for that to happen, after he’d made sure she was okay, he had to talk to her about putting to rest all the rumours and matchmaking agendas.

A break in the rain had him leave his ute and jog towards Grace’s cottage. She’d earlier texted to make sure he wasn’t coming to work in the bad weather. She still wasn’t a fan of his scaffolding even if he kept reassuring her it was safe. In his reply he said he needed to come to town so could pop over for a morning coffee. He hadn’t wanted to turn up unannounced. A smiley face emoji had communicated she’d be expecting him.

He went to knock on the door but it opened before his knuckles rapped on the wood.

Grace smiled as she moved away to let him in. ‘Bundy’s been waiting for you.’

Rowan bent to ruffle the kelpie’s neck. This morning, instead of wearing jeans with her pink work shirt, Grace wore black leggings that showcased every toned curve. Her feet were bare and her dark glossy hair fell down her back.

‘Coffee?’ she asked as if him coming to pay her a social call was a common occurrence.

‘That would be great.’

He patted Bundy for a few seconds more. When the kelpie tilted his head, Rowan knew he’d seen through his ruse to buy time to collect himself. Whereas from Grace’s perspective things wouldn’t have appeared to have changed between them after yesterday, they had for him. Being around Grace was a definite risk, but it was one he couldn’t stop himself from taking.
