THE FRONT DOOR IN THE upper floor loft echoed as it closed behind Law as he left.

Ian shivered. It wasn’t cold, although night was dropping in the mountains, which always made it chillier than it was during the day. He just felt a little lost now that they were back in Snowcroft again. The last twenty-four hours had been confusing and manic. The constant drugs that Ramirez had jammed into him hadn’t helped any, either.

He went over to the cupboard by the sink and pulled out two glasses, filling them with water. He handed one to Nicholas.

“What’s this for?” Nicholas watched him warily with those navy blue bloodshot eyes. Right now, he seemed suspicious about everything...like a skittish cat. Ian hated the haunted look in his eyes. Nicholas had never been free of the shadows that his life left, but this was more outright fear.

“We need to flush the rest of the drugs out of our system,” Ian said. “This is the easiest, healthiest way to do it. Drink up.”

As Nicholas slowly drank his water, he looked around the cabin.

Ian studied him. Now that the drugs were beginning to wear off, he was starting to see some of Nicholas’s personality come back.

“This is nice,” Nicholas said.

Ian nodded. He hadn’t been here before, but he’d known that Law had bought this place. Between this and the money he’d thrown around in Gran Colina, Ian wondered where exactly Law got all his money. As far as Ian knew, he didn’t have a job right now. Something to ask later.

“You know,” Nicholas said. “Ramirez...” For a moment Nicholas’ expression grew troubled. “He showed me the video of the two of you—Law and you in the back room of the club—together.”

Ian winced. He’d wondered what had happened to that video. While he didn’t regret his actions with Law, he did regret that Nicholas saw it. They hadn’t been anything more than friends for the last year, but the possibility for more had been there...before Law. “Sorry. I was doing what I had to do to find you.”

“So, there’s not something going on between you and the sexy ginger?” Every ounce of disbelief shone through Nicholas’s voice. “I noticed he didn’t say you were going to be sleeping in one of the guest rooms. Just me.”

Ian had noticed that, too, but had been too afraid of the answer to ask the question.

“Yeah.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Things are complicated between the two of us.”

“Well, that’s easy enough. Uncomplicate them.” Nicholas shrugged like it was just that easy. “He seems willing to do whatever he has to do to take care of you. That’s not something you can spit on.”

Relief swamped him. Nicholas seemed okay with whatever was brewing between him and Law, better than okay if Nicholas meant what he’d said. “When did you get so wise?”

“I’ve had a lot of alone time lately to think things through.”

Damn, yeah. That had to be true. “You ready to talk about that yet?”

“No.” Nicholas lips thinned and he paled slightly as he glanced away for a moment before refocusing on Ian.
