Chapter 25
âI see neither of you heeded my warnings. Winn, didnât I tell you to stay away from Wilhelmina?â Lou struggled to stand. âAnd Wilhelmina, the same about Winn?â
âYou stay off that foot.â Billie rushed to Louâs side. âHere, Iâll help you sit back.â
Winn looked sheepish. âI didnât tell her. She figured it out on her own. You know I canât hide myself in here.â He pressed around the edges of the mirror as if to prove his point. âWhen someone says the rhyme, I get pulled front and center to the frame. Weâve experimented.â
âCan you get him out?â Billie asked. She fluffed up Louâs pillow before setting it behind her.
Lou swatted at Billieâs hand. âQuit fussing. Heâd be sitting in that chair if I could get him out. I wouldnât wish his fate on anyone. Itâs a high price to pay for foolishness.â She looked at him with fondness, as a mother would a son.
Well, what do you know? Lou did have a soft heart beneath that crusty exterior. It just took Winn to bring it out of her.
Billie understood that sentiment. Winn had a way of getting into a personâs heart even when you didnât want him to. âWhat sort of foolishness did he do?â
âNot my tale to tell.â
Billie looked at Winn for the answer.
âIâm not in the mood,â he said.
âFine. What do we do now? How are we going to get him out of there?â She couldnât tell her uncle sheâd found the mirror without first getting Winn out of it. Uncle Dale wouldnât care who was in the mirror, as long as they could figure out the magic.
âYou are going to do nothing,â Lou said. âNow you know why you need to leaveâbefore this gets more complicated than it already is. And make sure you take that uncle with you.â
âI canât go away now that I know about this.â She waved her hand at the mirror.
âFor Winnâs sake, you need to go. I know the real reason your uncle is here. Iâd gone to Germany trying to find answers, and when I came back, Winn was waiting to tell me there was a man and girl asking questions about me. And theyâd been to the assayerâs office.â
She looked pointedly at Billie.
âMy uncle didnât tell me anything about his plans. All I knew was that we were coming here to give you that ridiculous watch, and then weâd be on our way back to Boston.â She didnât know if that was a good thing or not. Had there been no watch, no Winn. But she would have been home by now and happily unaware of the existence of a magic mirror except for in the family bedtime stories.
âAnd yet, youâre still here.â Lou turned her head as the flowers in the vase finally caught her eye. She stiffened, her features narrowing.
So, the advances of the mystery man were not welcomed. Billie would have to ask about him later. Right now, there were more important things to discuss. And not about why she and her uncle were still in town.
