So much had gone down at school. We’d lost the championship, and thanks to Peter, who’d done some digging, everyone at Lauder had found out I wasn’t related in any way to Langley Wines. I’d pushed away all the shit people were saying about how Lauder had tried to buy the championship by giving an inner-city poor kid a scholarship, but that I wasn’t good enough to get them one.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Ford asked one afternoon while he lay on his bed, tossing a hacky sack in the air and catching it. “I’m not like Peter or any of those guys.”

When the news about my lack of lineage hit the rumor mill at school, I’d worried how Ford would react, but all I saw in his eyes was hurt. Ford had come to trust in our friendship, and I had deceived him twice. Once with Imogen and now with the fact that I was a nobody. Both times, he was awesome about it.

I stopped looking through the suits in his closet and sat on the edge of his king-size bed. “I don’t know. The sick part is I think I enjoyed being someone else for a little bit. Not the poor kid without a future.”

He stopped throwing the hacky sack and sat up. “You’re joking, right? You’re not nobody. You’re gonna play for the Renegades.” He pushed me with one arm. “Grab the navy suit. It’s my best.”

As if Ford couldn’t have been a better friend already, he was letting me borrow a suit because the New York Renegades had asked me to come down and talk to their organization. With the draft only six weeks away, it was promising that a team was interested.

“I’d kill to be in your position, but we all know where I have to go.”

“You act like going to college is a jail sentence.” I glanced over my shoulder. “What if I get hurt in my first game?”

“You won’t,” Imogen said, walking into the room.

She looked off, but I knew she’d been taking some heat from some of the girls at school about me. Girls would approach me when she wasn’t around and insinuate that they’d be a much more generous girlfriend. I wasn’t stupid. Kids at school were under the impression that Imogen and I didn’t have sex because I never mentioned it to anyone and neither did she. It wasn’t anyone’s business what we did or didn’t do, and unlike most guys my age, I didn’t see the need to advertise the fact that I was sleeping with the girl I loved.

“You can’t be sure of that.” I picked up the blue suit, but Imogen took it from me and hung it back on the rack.

“You look better in charcoal,” she said.

“Hey, I picked the blue.” Ford went back and lay on his bed, tossing the hacky sack in the air.

“You look good in blue because of your blond hair. Warner has darker hair.” She ran her hands through my hair and stared up at me.
