After lunch with Sophie, I got so caught up with other stuff that needed to be done, that I didn’t realize how late it was. There was still no email or call back from Jackie so now I really knew I had been played. Never the one to really depend on anybody to get shit done, I started doing research on how I could help myself get this zoning shit squared away. Knowing I wouldn’t get shit done at home, I decided to order some food but not before I poured me a glass of D’usse.

As I picked up my phone and open the Grubhub app I had, I heard a noise that sounded like it was coming from Sophie’s office. Before I could get up good, there was a knock on my door. When it opened, I was shocked to see that it was Sophie. My phone read that it was going on seven in the evening, and I was surprised she was still here. The look on her face was just like the one from this morning, making me frown.

“Hey, I just wanted to let you know I was leaving.”

“I honestly didn’t even know you were still here. Working hard and it’s only your first day on the job.” I smiled at her, hoping I would get one in return.

“Is there anything you need me to do before I take off?”

“As a matter fact, there is. Come sit and have a drink with me.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea, Mr. Hearns. Besides, I’ve had a rough day and just wanna go home.”

“Come on, Sophie. Have a drink with me and tell me how your first day went. I promise not to keep you too late. Plus, you look like you could use a listening ear.”

“I guess one drink won’t hurt.”

Sophie came all the way into my office before removing her coat and placing it on one of the two chairs that were in front of my desk. After putting her purse in the same chair, she sat in the other one and took the glass I was handing her. She took a few sips then just held the glass. At first, she wasn’t looking at me but when she did, I could see the tears threatening to fall from her eyes.

“I’m about to order some food, would you like some?”

“Sure. Just get me whatever you get.”

“Cool. So Sophie, tell me what’s going on that has you on the verge of tears.”

There was a pregnant pause before she sighed.

“I probably shouldn’t even be talking about this with my boss but since you asked, I think my girlfriend is cheating on me. She didn’t come home last night and didn’t show up for work today either. When I called her, she rushed me off the phone and hasn’t answered any of my calls since.”

I’ve seen Ashley flirt with customers and other employees before, but I took it as her just being extra friendly. She was especially friendly with James, but I feel like it’s not my place to tell Sophie that.
