CASSIE

He was sulking, that was the best description. I did something to piss him off, and instead of telling me, he’s throwing a silent tantrum. That was usually the point at which I would walk away from a relationship, but since we weren’t really in one, I prodded instead. Something about Jake made me throw all my rules out the window.

I followed him out to his car. The last thing I needed was to have a scene in the front foyer of the Naval base. I would prefer if we didn’t have a scene at all but that looked to be impossible. Having the scene in his car was the best case scenario. He opened the door for me and helped me into the front seat. He waited for me to buckle my seat belt before he closed the door and put our bags in the trunk.

Only once we passed the access boom and off the base did I speak. “Are you going to tell me what is bothering you, or am I supposed to guess?”

He gave me a look before focusing his eyes on the road. “What are we Cassie?”

“What is that supposed to mean?”

“Are we a former One-night Stand who occasionally break the rules, or do we want more?”

I wasn’t sure what was bothering him, but I was beginning to get an idea. “We can’t have more, Jake. Not if we both value our careers.”

“And not if we’re going to make decisions about our future independently.”

There it was, the reason for his annoyance. “Is this about my contract? I didn’t know that…when I signed it I wasn’t sure what we were.”

“Well, I thought we were two people who wanted to be a couple and couldn’t find a way to make that happen.”

“And you expected me to make a decision to suit you. I didn’t even know if you wanted more than sex from me.”

He was silent for a long time. Long enough that the tension in the car was becoming uncomfortable. When he finally stopped at a red light, he turned to me.

“You think I want you to quit. I am not pissed off because you chose a career over a relationship with me. But let’s face it, that is exactly what you did.” He turned back to the road. “At least if we had a conversation beforehand, I could convince myself that you wanted this as much as I did, and we reached the best solution for us.”

I didn’t have anything to say to that. He was right and he was wrong. Yes, we could’ve discussed it, but then we would’ve been a couple. There wasn’t a solution. “And you think there was a solution? Is there a way you would’ve compromised.”

“Cassie, I will be leaving the Navy in three months, two weeks and four days.” He pulled away again. “The compromise we both would’ve made was to wait a few months. And I would leave and you would keep your job and we both would be free to see one another.
