Chapter 10

Charley stood in the middle of the decrepit little hotel room and stared at the whiskey bottle in her hand. She'd fought so damn hard to get here, to this very moment, to be a full operative in the middle of a Guardian-sanctioned mission, and she'd fucked it up by acting on instinct rather than thinking. Uncorking the whiskey, she took a swig. The liquor hurt the cuts in her mouth, but the warm numbing that would follow would make the pain worth it.

The water turned on in the bathroom. She glanced down at her blood-soaked shirt. Joey's words buzzed through her mind. Ask herself the hard questions? What the hell? The last two-and-a-half years had been nothing but a series of hard questions and harder training. She'd gambled everything on becoming an operative. Everything she used to have or could have in the future could be gone because of the decisions she'd made. Could she make the hard decisions? Fuck, yes.

She closed her eyes and pictured the girl in that dark little tavern. Those perverts kept the girl hidden from most of the establishment, but from where she was sitting, she could see what they were doing, and she could also see that the young one was terrified.

Charley upended the bottle again and downed a larger gulp. There was no decision as far as she was concerned. Helping the people who couldn't help themselves was a pillar of Guardian's foundational tenants. She hadn't endangered the mission, thank God.

Smoke's presence behind her registered as his arms looped around her waist. Thankfully, he didn't pull or tug her back against him. She leaned back and sighed when he took her weight. “Come on. Let me take care of you tonight.”

He kissed her temple, and she shook her head before she whispered, “I'm okay.”

“Neither one of us is okay right now. We need a shower, some food, and rest.” He snaked his hand down her arm and grabbed the whiskey bottle from her. “Warm water. Now.”

She turned in his arms and stared up at him. She knew she looked like death warmed over, her nose hurt like a bitch, and if the soreness was any indication, she'd have two wicked black eyes. “I would do what I did over again. Every time.”

A gentle smile formed, and his eyes warmed and softened. “I know.” He put the whiskey bottle down and took her hand, leading her into the bathroom where he carefully undressed her. His fingers lightly trailed over her bruises before he stripped out of his clothes. They stepped under the hot water. He moved so she was directly under the fall. She tipped her head back and let the deluge rain down her face. Soapy hands grabbed her wrist. Smoke's fingers pressed into the palm and back of her hand and rubbed. The delightful sensation moved as his hands traveled up her arm to her shoulder. He stopped and she opened her eyes. As he lathered his hands again, she took in the sheer masculine beauty standing before her.
