Between the previous night’s big win and the momentum she’d been gaining on her business plan, Sarah had some extra pep in her step this Friday morning. She practically beat down the doors to Parchment at 7 am, alarming Ashley when she unlocked the front doors for business and was met by an all too eager Sarah.

Now, four hours into her workday and in need of a quick break for lunch, Sarah typed away as she continued to fiddle with a spreadsheet detailing projected income. Having never been a fan of math, Sarah had put this portion of the business plan off until she couldn’t procrastinate any longer. She was almost done with the plan—and thus, the grant application—at this point, and successfully projecting her financials was her last big task.

Sarah ran down the column with potential expenses and scanned it to make sure she wasn’t missing anything. A new computer, exclusively for her new marketing firm. Got it. A domain name, website hosting, and associated fees. Got it. Graphic design software. Got it. Bookkeeping software subscription to make business finances easy. Got it. Business cards. Got it. Sarah kept scrolling down the list, certain that she was missing something obvious.

Moving her mouse down to hover at the dock at the bottom of her screen, Sarah clicked on her web browser. Quickly navigating to the grant’s website, she scrolled to an FAQ section that answered basic questions geared toward applicants who’d never written a business plan before.

What kinds of purchases count as business expenses? the website read.

Hardware and software that’s necessary to operate your business, subscriptions that are relevant to your industry and/or operations, office supplies like paper—

“Supplies!” Sarah yelled, louder than intended. She knew she’d been missing something. “How could I forget office supplies?”

Out of the corner of her eye, Sarah saw the twenty-something hipster that was there every day staring at her out of curiosity.

“Sorry for disturbing you,” she said. She pointed to her computer. “This whole business plan thing is pretty intense.”

The hipster flashed Sarah a polite smile and returned to his computer, as did Sarah once she was satisfied that he’d looked away. She clicked the red X on the top left of her browser window and returned to her spreadsheet, before opening up an Internet window again and starting a Google search.

List of basic office supplies to start a small home business and how much they cost, she typed and hit send.

For the next hour, Sarah worked intently on a list of necessary office supplies and used the Internet to help her find their approximate value, at which point she input a value for things like paper, staplers, pens, and stamps into the spreadsheet.

Sarah was so zoned into her work that she smelled him before she saw him.

“Hey,” she said looking up. Greg had quietly approached her table and was silently hovering over her.

“I didn’t mean to disturb you,” Greg said. “Or creep you out, for that matter. I was just waiting for you to take a quick pause.
