Three steps to create a gallery wall

A scattering of small wall accents creates the sense of clutter. Instead, place like-concept wall hangings to create a larger single appearance that can be the focal point of your room.

1. Pick a theme. To make the gallery cohesive, it’s important to select items along the same theme or color palette. Black-and-white photos, for example, have an arty look, while images with a variety of blues add dimension. Also, select similar style frames that are simple. Ikea’s Ribba series has mattes and various finishes for different print sizes.

2. Define the space. In small homes, the gallery concept works best on a focus wall (over the couch or behind the bed, for example). Start with two to four framed prints placed at the same height. (Note: Leave eight inches between the base of the frame and the top of the furniture.) Vary the distance and orientation between them, adding images up or out.

3. Evolve. Change out pieces; add new ones. As with every aspect of your home (and life), allow your collection to grow to fit your needs and interests.

Have a signature color

With all this neutral vibe going on to expand the look of your teensy home, you don’t want to veer into hospital scenery from Girl, Interrupted territory. Having a signature color gives an accent to your home while showing off your personality. It facilitates your ability to coordinate accessories, art, and other décor elements so that they blend and create a cohesive look. Just remember that there can be too much of a good thing. Overdoing the fire engine red touches can quickly turn your space into Toon Town.

Extend your signature hue to other areas of your life, like entertaining and gift giving. It saves time when you can consistently defer to the Kelly green ribbon. And it’s a detail that people will remember—every girl knows the quality of a gift inside a bright blue box and those red envelopes let everyone know the newest release is in it.

DECODING COLORS

White signifies innocence, purity, and goodness. Some cultures use white as the color of mourning.

Gold is the color of wealth and prosperity.

Black, actually the absence of color, is associated with power, authority, evil, and, in recent times, elegance.

Yellow, the color of the sun, is often associated with happiness. It also symbolizes peace. In literature, the tone has illustrated women with hysteria.

Blue imparts tranquility. However, some say it increases productivity, which is why the hue is also associated with corporate cultures. Those shades are most often the cold tones; others impart a sense of peace.

Brown is earthy. It is also said to stimulate appetite.

Red is the color of both passion and caution. Some cultures see it as a lucky color. In Asia, many brides wear shades of red.

Green, in addition to money, reflects nature and fertility. It is said to symbolize both renewal and jealousy.

Purple is the color of royalty. It was said to have been Cleopatra’s favorite.
