Maggie sat on the edge of her seat as she waited for Jan and Michael to arrive. She was overjoyed when the young woman had rung their room to say they’d join them for dinner that night. Maggie couldn’t help but think that something was about to happen. She couldn’t take their meeting as purely coincidental. There had to be more. Nothing about this trip so far had been arbitrary.

“There they are,” she said as the couple walked in. She raised her hand and waved to get their attention.

Jan smiled and waved back. “Sorry we’re late,” she said as they approached the table.

Frank and Maggie stood to greet them. “It’s no problem at all. We weren’t waiting long.”

“Have a seat,” Frank said, extending his hand. Michael pulled a chair out for Jan before sitting.

“Thank you for inviting us. Jan insisted we come,” he said.

She grinned. “What can I say? I had a good feeling.”

“I did also,” Maggie confirmed.

The two women smiled at one another. A waitress brought them menus and poured water into four glasses as they talked. The dining room was cosy but tropical with dark timber floors, cane furniture, and loads of green luscious plants.

The meal was wonderful, but the conversation was better. Maggie learned so much about life as a missionary—the joys, the heartaches, and the blessing of watching someone who’d never known Christ accept Him into their heart. Listening to Michael speak was invigorating. Frank seemed entranced. There was a light in his eyes as he sat with his back straight, his gaze fixed on Michael while he spoke of travelling to Asia and the Middle East. He’d seen a lot and experienced more.

“You’re truly blessed,” Maggie said when he finished another story.

“That’s quite a life you’ve had,” Frank said. “And to think you’ve just begun. And now that you have your bride at your side, I can only foresee more wonderful experiences.”

Michael smiled, draping his arm around the back of Jan’s chair. “They’ve already begun. Marrying her is the highlight of my life. I waited so long, and finally I can call her my wife.”

Maggie looked at Frank as his hand clasped hers. “I know what you mean. I felt the same when I married Maggie.”

She patted his hand. “Marriage is a wonderful adventure. A lifetime adventure as two become one. There’ll be plenty of things to test the vows you made today. Some good and some challenging. You have to be resolute that no matter what happens, you’ll stand for each other.”

“We do already,” Jan said, smiling.

“If you’d allow us,” Maggie said, “Frank and I would love to bless you with a gift.”

Obviously curious, the young couple glanced at each other before Michael replied, “Of course.”

Nodding, Maggie deferred to Frank.

He pulled a small envelope from his top pocket and slid it across the table. When they’d arrived in their room and Jan called to say they’d join them for dinner, they’d immediately prayed about it and were moved to give the couple a gift to start their married journey.
