Chapter Fourteen

Brooks

Shit.

She didn’t want a savior, but the more she revealed, the more I wanted to protect her. Help her. Support her. Be a partner for her as she barged her way through a tough life. She didn’t look ashamed when she shared information about her family, which I’d assumed she would. Instead, she looked angry and sad.

And even a little bit motivated. It had to be one of the driving factors for her to stick to her plans and why she never let anyone in. I fought the urge to crush her against me and not let go. I chose to smile, continue holding her hand and focus on the better part of her confessions. “Gray, huh? Like, Fifty Shades of?”

She rolled her eyes. “Gray is the new black.”

“No, it’s not.”

She snorted, and the sound crept its way into my heart and squeezed it. She should have been able to laugh with ease, but she’d been dealt a different hand. “What kind of dogs would you get?”

“You’re brilliant at moving attention off yourself.” I moved closer to her. “It is quite a talent.”

“A stupid boy in high school. He played these CDs in his shitty car and I loved how loud and obnoxious it was. It made me forget about the family drama going on at home. The hoarse voices and banging bass calmed me. It doesn’t make sense, I know, but I like how I feel when I listen to it.”

“Our likes don’t have to make sense. There’s a One Direction song that makes me bop my head every single time. We like what we like.”

She giggled—a sweet, charming sound—and gave me a sultry look. “You said you could have the same meal every day? Well, I could have milkshakes every day for the rest of my life.”

“You know…” I changed my tone and she noticed. Her breathing hitched when I scooted closer. “We could order a couple from room service and enjoy them in my room.”

“Naked?”

“Obviously. I have a no-clothes rule.”

“Surprising no one,” she said, smiling afterward. “That sounds perfect.”

“Let’s do it.”

We found Fiona and Gideon, both of them way past tipsy, and they spent thirty seconds hugging each of us, and I met Michelle’s gaze over Gideon’s shoulder and winked. She patted her friend’s back and promised to call soon, and I held out my hand, waiting for her to take it.

She did.

My heart beat fast in anticipation. I’d been fighting a hard-on since the limo and now the promise of
