It had been a minute since I had to visit a nigga in prison, so to go through all that searching shit was beginning to become a little nerve-wracking. I sucked it up since this wasn’t going to be an everyday occurrence. Of course, the visiting room was packed to the rim. Baby mommas and their kids were all over the place, so me and Tenisha scooted out their way and found a seat near the vending machines. On our way through the crowd we got a few stares, but that shit didn’t flatter us at all. I could not have cared less about these damn jailbirds staring at me. I can’t say that for their women, though. If looks could kill, me and Tee would be laid out on this floor. But since we were alive and still breathing, I refused to be worried about how they were hating on us. As long as they kept their distance from us, then everything was going to be all right on my end.
Now, about twenty seconds after we took a seat at the table, Tenisha noticed that Jay and Supreme was looking around the visiting room for us. “We’re over here.” She stood up and waved.
When Tee got their attention, they started walking toward us. “You know we’re gonna have to sit at separate tables, right?” she mentioned to me.
“I’m not sitting with him by myself,” I protested.
“Well, you’re gonna have to. That’s rules. And besides, even if the prison did allow Jay and Supreme to sit together, I wouldn’t want y’all all over top of me while my boo and I talk dirty to each other,” she replied flatly, and then she moved forward to greet Jay.
Right after they embraced each other and kissed, they took the seat at the table just a couple of feet away from me. Jay did manage to speak to me before Tenisha abruptly ushered him away. I spoke back and immediately shifted my focus to Supreme.
KEEPING MY ENEMIES CLOSE / 157
“Hi,” I said in a low whisper. Mesmerized by his entire being, I couldn’t take my eyes off this man. Pictures did him no justice. Supreme was a handsome man. From the low-cut waves that danced around his head to the full and well-trimmed beard that caressed his smooth face. His nose was the perfect size, his eyes were deep set, interesting, and his shoulders were prominent . . . like an athlete’s.
“Hello.” He smiled, and took a seat next to me.
The moment his body shifted, the scent of his cologne hit me like a ton of bricks. The fragrance was nice and light, and it did him some justice. I was literally about to wet my panties. “I know you are surprised to see me,” I said.
“No, not really.” He smiled.
Stunned by his comment, I said, “What do you mean by that?”
“Let’s just say that I am the type of man who believes in the powers of destiny.”
“Yeah, okay,” I responded nonchalantly, and then I glanced over toward Tenisha and Jay.
