I was stunned when Taylor first grabbed my wrist and started hauling me away, but I was so shaken by his sudden appearance I had been too shocked to move away. I had just come out of the storage area next to the kitchen, where I had hidden the things I needed for the potion I was planning to make the next day. The ingredients had to be mixed at the last moment and drunk while they were still fresh for them to work properly. I had only just stepped back out to the hallway when he popped up like a dirty secret. I felt like he must have been able to see right through me as to what I really was and what I'd been doing and he was going to haul me in front of Nic and the others to denounce me. They would annihilate me without a second thought right there in the garden. He crowded me up against a wall and I leaned back against it, feeling too fragile and hollowed out to move. I could barely breathe.

That’s when Nic showed up and before I knew it, I was being spirited away to Ravenwood, which I learned was Thibeau’s old home. Rafe had lived there until recently and he’d just sold it to the vampires. Only in New Orleans.

Perfect for my situation, actually. I did know what it would bring, but right now, tonight, I would do anything to forget all that and keep dreaming that Taylor and I had some kind of future. And if I died tomorrow at Nic and Beau’s wedding, which I fully expected to do, at least I’d have this one night. Because at the end of the night, I knew I was going to let Taylor take me home with him if that was what he wanted. I was desperate to be in his arms one last time.

Before I came here to New Orleans, I had practiced the spell Giselle taught me to say at the wedding over and over again. It was a wicked, cruel spell and arcane enough that I figured nobody would know what the words even meant for a moment or two, and by the time they did, and managed to retaliate with a spell of their own, it would already be too late.

Gabriel’s relatives could be a problem, though, along with Marchand’s uncle, the handsome Azazel, who had such a strange aura around him. I suspected,
