Fabric Softeners

Fabric softeners use chemicals to modify a fabric’s surface. Some leave a film on the surface of fibers, while others are absorbed by the fibers, causing colors to dull. The EPA has found the following chemicals contained in fabric softeners: alpha-terpinol, benzyl alcohol, benzyl acetate, camphor, chloroform, ethyl acetate, limonene, linalol, pentane, and who knows what other chemicals in the artificial fragrances that are added to cover up the smell of other chemicals. In addition, quaternary ammonium compounds are frequently part of fabric softener formulas.

These chemicals have been linked to central nervous system disorders, cancer, respiratory tract irritation, and symptoms such as headache, nausea, dizziness, skin rash, and allergic reactions. Why would anyone want these chemicals in his or her bedroom?
