He waited for me at edge of the window. His dark skin perfect underneath the nightâs dim lit sky. He felt like home now that I was awake and aware. His handsomely chiseled face no longer reminded me of the threatening monster that took my throat all but a few hours ago.
âBeautiful,â he whispered. âI always knew that you would grow into a beautiful woman. Such lovely skin⦠soft lips⦠and now that we are equals, you are even more perfect than before.â
He extended his hand. âCome with me. I will protect you and teach you everything you need to know about what you are. You will never have to live in fear again.â
âSkai.â
I am not surprised to discover my sister behind us, standing in the middle of the room in front of the metal slab that rest in the center. In her arms, she held a loaded shotgun and Iâm sure the rest of her body was covered with additional weaponry.
âKaylaâ I breathed. I turned around to see the full view of her. Her cheeks, stained with dried tears, her eyes puffy and red from crying. I wished I could hug her and tell her that everything will be ok.
Everything would be ok if she lets me go.
âDonât go with him,â she pleaded with me, aiming the gun in his direction. âHeâs taken so much from us. His kind are a curse! Come with me. We can find a cure. Let me help you.â
âI canât do that. You know there is no cure.â
âWe can find one!â She sobbed, as her finger shakily traced the trigger. âIt didnât have to be this way. Our parents, Grams, they fucked up!â
âThat they did,â I said and took a step towards her.
âYouâre not a monster to me,â she cried. âYou will always be my sister.â
âAnd you will always be mine,â I whispered. Her blood smelled too good to me and I forced myself to stop walking. âI love you Kayla.â
âI love you too, Skai.â She wept. âPlease donât leave me.â
I took a look at her for the final time. All of this was wrong. So wrong. We were supposed to be each otherâs bridesmaids at our weddings. We were supposed to be there for each otherâs kids. I was supposed to be there to hold her during her first break up and help her along with life until we grew old.
âYou know I have to. It is for the best.â
âBut I donât want you to.â
âI donât want to either. I heard everything that Grams said. At least, now it all makes sense.â
âYou would rather go with the fucker that killed you! He stole your humanity and turned you into what you are than be with me?â
âHow can I be with you when I want your blood, Kayla?â My honest question made her freeze. Her gaze bounced between me and my maker and then back to me again. The longer she stayed the thirstier I became. My saliva thickened along my gumline and I shuddered.
