Other British Cities Which Engaged in the Slave Trade

It has not been possible to conduct a series of visits to all the British cities and towns which participated in the transatlantic slave trade. However, at least one has been identified which has publicly acknowledged its involvement-Lancaster. This recognition consists primarily of a small permanent exhibit in the city's museum, entitled Black Ivory-A History of British Slavery. The display of material culture is unusual in that it focuses sharply on the port's involvement, rather than the more usual Middle Passage emphasis. Exhibits relate to slaves who were brought to Lancaster, and the economic growth in Lancaster that was fueled by the profits of slavery is explored. There is no emphasis on any anti-slavery movement within the city.

The economic impact of slavery is more widely recognized in authors such as Andrew White (1992), who comments in a book which looks at the broad context of Lancaster's Georgian architecture that Lancaster was heavily involved in the slave trade. Melinda Elder's (1994) study of Lancaster's commitment to the slave trade is one of the few works available at Britain's slavery heritage centers that records the decline of the slave trade as being attributable to hostilities, outright war and economic conditions rather than to any impact of abolitionism.

Among other cities which display slavery artefacts in their museums, there is Glasgow (not a major port of slave trade activity). However, it should be noted that the majority of cities and towns which did have a small-scale involvement with the transatlantic slave trade (compared to Liverpool, London and Bristol) remain, at least in terms of what they display in their museums, in denial.
