Chapter 9

The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother.

~Theodore Hesburgh~

Slade

September 1st, 1998

I stood under the shower letting the water rain down on me hoping desperately that it would wake me up some. I felt like a fucking zombie. Who the hell gets up at five in the morning every day? I sighed. Viper apparently. Since I wanted to talk to him as soon as possible, guess who else was up at this godforsaken hour? Me.

After I dressed, I made my way toward the kitchen, praying someone was awake and had made some coffee. The closer I got to my destination, a heady scent reached my nose. Hell. Maybe I would make it after all. All I needed was a gallon of the dark liquid and I might be able to function all damn day. As I staggered into the room, laughter greeted me. I turned bleary eyes in the direction it came from to see my dad snickering at me. Glad someone had something to laugh at.

“Late night, son?” he asked in an amused tone.

“Not really. Early fucking morning is the problem. People are fucking nuts to get up before the sun rises. Hell, it’s usually overhead before I even crack an eye,” I said as I grabbed a mug off the little tree my mom kept the coffee cups on.

With eyes barely cracked, I poured the life-giving nectar into my mug, managed to get the pot back in place, lowered my head over the vapor that was wafting up from the cup and drew in a deep breath. I groaned. Right now, I didn’t think anything could smell any better. As I took a sip of its life-giving sustenance, I felt a little spark of life inside me. I turned around and leaned against the counter, my eyes were closed as I inhaled my first cup. After pouring my second cup, I finally opened my eyes only to see my mom and dad grinning at me.

Damn. I liked those words: my mom and dad. Then I winced as I realized Mom had heard me dropping major F bombs this morning.

“Morning,” I murmured as I took in the scene in front of me. Two empty plates were sitting on the table and Mom was holding a biscuit with butter and honey on it.

“You’re eating.”

“Yeah,” she said and smiled at me. “I woke up hungry, so Slade cooked us breakfast.”

I watched as her brows went down and she glanced back and forth between Dad and me.

“We need to figure something out about this,” she said.

I looked at her confused as hell. It was way too damn early for anything that took too much thought. Damn. Maybe I shouldn’t approach Viper this early. I needed to be on my toes when we talked. I pondered on that until I heard Dad question Mom.

“Need to figure what out, Drey?”

“Well, it’s going to get confusing calling you both Slade. I’ve always thought of you by that name, but I’ve called Slade, Slade his whole life.
