Chapter 14 – Regicide (Present)

Theodore stumbled slightly as the memories pushed him off-balance, but he regained his composure and quickly made his way through the palace to the small room where he knew the rest of the Archmages would be, as they had been given a place of their own to rest and recover by the King.

Theodore knew there had only been fifteen Archmages at the point when the young fire mage had beaten him, but he had to do something to make amends; these were his people, his friends, and they needed to know that they didn't have to fear him any more.

As soon as he reached the Archmage's chambers, Theodore pushed the door open and stood face to face with fifteen Archmages of the Cyclonic Essence.

"C… Captain Ren," the closest of the mages, stuttered when his eyes fell upon Theodore, still dressed in his less-than-royal clothes and still carrying the majestic shining sword at his hip.

Theodore didn't respond but quietly closed the door behind him so that what he had to say next would not be overheard.

"Where have you been? We all thought you had perished in the…" the mage trailed off as though he remembered who it was he was speaking to.

"Who do you think you are talking to?" Theodore forced his expression to one of twisted anger. "How dare you presume that I, the mighty Captain Ren, would be felled by such weaklings!"

The room fell silent for a long pause, and then Theodore laughed heartily. It was strange. He could tell that the Archmages were certainly scared of him because of what Captain Ren had portrayed him as, but these people had once been his friends, his equals, and above anything else, he was pleased to see them all.

Theodore's laughter echoed in the room, a mix of relief and genuine joy. He saw the confusion and fear in the eyes of the Archmages, but he knew he had to dispel their concerns and let them see the truth.

As the laughter died down, Theodore took a step forward; his voice filled with sincerity. "My friends, it is me, Theodore," he said, his voice steady and calm. "Captain Ren is no more. But there is so much I have to explain to you all."

The Archmages exchanged glances, unsure of whether or not to believe Theodore's words. But as they looked into his eyes, they saw a flicker of the person they had once known, the person they had fought alongside and trusted.

"It's really me," Theodore pressed, his voice filled with emotion. "I cannot express how sorry I am for the pain I have caused, for the fear and confusion I have brought upon all of you. But I want you to know that I am here to make amends, to right the wrongs that were done under the influence of Captain Ren."

He paused, allowing his words to sink in. The room remained silent, the Archmages grappling with the conflicting emotions within them.

One of the mages, a woman with a determined expression, stepped forward.
