I’ve noticed this one thing—these days, the landscape of the city, its substance, its structure has a completely different feel to it.

When you venture into this or that neighborhood, you immediately recall whether it’s been hit or not, and if it has been, you recall the last time it was. This perception of the city, driven by the war, is completely different—distinguishing neighborhoods by their potential threat level and the degree of damage done. I have to say this is a rather joyless way of perceiving where you live.

I think we’ll continue to see our city like this for a long time after the war—this place got hit, this one didn’t, thank God. Then this whole optical system will erode away to nothing, that’s obvious. That’s the way it ought to be. Here in Kharkiv, we aren’t very well aware of what particular city blocks were hammered the hardest in August and September 1943. Now looking at the city hurts. You want to protect it. Which is just what the Armed Forces of Ukraine are doing. :) And we’re helping out a little. :)

Besides that, Kharkiv is sunny. Ukrainian flags flutter above Kharkiv. :)
