EE = electronics and electricals, FB = food and beverages, LFS = Labour Force Survey, STEP = Skills Toward Employment and Productivity.
Notes: High-skilled workers are managers, professionals, and technicians. The table shows the share of workers that lack a given skill.
Sources: Estimations based on microdata from World Bank (2012) and Department of Census and Statistics Quarterly Labour Force Survey 2016.
Among medium-skilled occupations in the two subsectors, workers in the EE subsector appear to be lacking in several core competencies (Table 3.5). Clerical staff in the EE subsector show a lack of openness, but those who can make presentations are extroverted and show stability. In contrast, clerical workers in the FB subsector cannot make presentations but have all other core competencies. As for technical skills, clerical workers in the FB subsector show lack of computer skills, while a fourth of clerical workers in the EE subsector are similarly constrained (Table 3.6). The level of English literacy is quite good in both subsectors, with only 7% of clerical workers in EE and 6% of sales and service workers in FB unable to read and write in English. However, high scores for literacy in English may be based on respondentsâ ability to write their names in English, and not based on a test of functional literacy.
