Chapter 19

After the cabin roof collapsed and most of the militia members had left, Eddie walked slowly around the fire looking for any sign of human remains. He found none. He knew Addison and the militia leader hadn’t left through the cabin’s only door. There was a good chance the two of them were inside when the roof caved in.

In order to find his twisted form of closure, Eddie wanted—needed, even—to prove to himself that Addison was dead. But time was short, and he figured the cops or firemen would be there soon. He didn’t know if anyone had called 911, but house fires were difficult to hide. He figured someone must have reported it, so whatever he was going to do, he needed to do it fast.

Eddie turned away from the fire’s captivating flicker and walked quickly toward the truck, the only remaining vehicle at the site. He found this more than a little puzzling. On one hand, the presence of the truck indicated not everyone had made it out of the fire, or at least he hoped that’s what it meant. He had seen six people, the militia flunkies, leave in the other vehicles. Addison and the militia leader must have either burned to death or somehow vanished.

On the other hand, with the pungent smell of burning flesh absent, it was possible no one had been caught inside the cabin as it had burned. But that wouldn’t explain the truck or the two people who were unaccounted for. Eddie stopped in his tracks.

He’d been hiding in the woods near the truck so he could keep an eye on it and the front door. But maybe Addison and the militia guy hadn’t come for the truck, anticipating that Eddie was hanging around. But how in blazes did they disappear? Maybe they didn’t. His head was killing him just trying to think this through.

Facing more pressing needs, Eddie finished walking to the truck and tried the passenger door. It was unlocked. He opened it, looking for anything that might prove useful, especially the keys. He noticed the tire iron under the seat and grabbed it, thinking it might come in handy as a weapon if he ran out of ammunition for his handgun. He also grabbed a map from the seat, a flashlight, and two water bottles—one he drank immediately, and the other he stuck in his back pocket. I wonder if that woman got past me and still has my backpack. He could sure use it now.

Eddie quickly checked the driver’s side but didn’t find anything useful. Next, he ran his hands under each fender, looking for a magnetic key box. No luck. I guess I’ll have to keep walking. But before he left, he knelt beside the two rear tires and let the air out just in case its owner was alive and returned. If I gotta walk, so do they!

Next, Eddie decided to search the cabin’s perimeter for any clues about Addison’s whereabouts. He wasn’t sure what he was looking for, but he searched anyway.
