Wanda drove a little slower than she had on the way to the church. She followed the directions that Sister Lacey gave without knowing where they were headed.

Looking out the window, Lovely sighed with contentment. “Look at the ocean! It’s so beautiful!” They rode along Ocean Avenue, which was lined with boardwalks and sandy dunes. The roar of the ocean waves and the smell of the salty air was a refreshing change from the musty bell tower.

“Where are we going?” Sister Wanda asked.

“Just keep going straight!” Lacey answered.

They watched as people jogged down the boardwalks. Mothers pushed baby strollers along the wooden walkway. However, those sights disappeared as they reached a remote part of the shore. Here the sandy roadway was lined with deserted dunes and flocks of seagulls.

“BEACON OF BRIGHTNESS!” Sister Lacey pointed. “THERE IT IS!”

Sister Wanda parked the car and they all got out, gazing at the beautiful lighthouse that stood on the rocky outcropping on the ocean’s edge.

“Of course!” Krumbles smiled. “‘It shows the way but never leaves, a sailor looks and he believes.’ A lighthouse stands tall, and its light guides sailors to safety. Now the clue makes sense.” Krumbles turned to Lacey. “But how did you figure it out?”

“My father used to own a sailboat, and he would take our family out of the city on summer weekends to sail along the coast. He would always point to the lighthouse and say that the lighthouse is to the sailors like God is to us. His light is always standing strong and guiding us to safety.”

“That’s beautiful!” Lovely sighed.

“Babbling Blather! Let’s get going.” Lacey started toward the lighthouse, and the other Sisters struggled through the sand dunes as they followed. As they walked along the rough rocks on the jetty, they tried to avoid the ocean spray—with little success. Finally reaching the lighthouse, Lacey tried the knob but found it locked. Everyone groaned. “What do we do now?” Wanda wondered out loud.

“Look! There’s a little cottage over there.” Lovely pointed. “Perhaps the lighthouse keeper lives there.”

They hurried over to the white-washed cottage. Sure enough, a ruddy little man answered their knock at the door.

“Wat ya want!” he shouted as he looked at the Sisters standing at his door.

“Please, sir, may we look inside the lighthouse?” Lovely asked softly.

Lighting his pipe, he stared for a moment. “NA!” he said and started closing his door.

“Ya Cranky Curmudgeon!” Sister Lacey shouted. “Hand over the key!”

The little man paused and stared at Sister Lacey. Suddenly he smiled. “Well now, if yer put it that-a-way, I might, but only if yer leave me be!”

He reached into his pocket and handed Lacey a ring of keys. “Put ’em under the mat, and don’t be disturbing me rest again!” He slammed the door.

All the Sisters stared at Lacey.

“How did you do that?” Krumbles asked.

“Whittling Words! Sometimes you need to speak the other person’s language! Let’s get going.” Over to the lighthouse, they went.

Up, up, up the spiral staircase they struggled.

“My feet hurt!” Krumbles cried.
