ROSLYN D. SMITH is an inmate/writer at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women in Westchester, New York. She is serving two consecutive twenty-five years to life sentences for a double homicide, and (as of 2002) has been incarcerated for the past twenty-four years. Her writings from “Net of Souls” have helped raise needed funds for the continuation of college programs at Bedford Hills Facility. She has taught “Parenting from a Distance” classes in the facility, and is currently involved in the writing workshop, as well as with “Puppies Behind Bars”—a program through which inmates raise guide dogs for the blind. She is raising her second pup, Quinn. She has a B.A. from Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, New York, and is the proud mother of her daughter, Anastasha, who is the inspiration for her writing. This is her first published piece.
