âKING EOTH WAS THE ONLY KNOWN DRAGONBLOOD to ever bond with two dragons at the same time,â said Sisera as she explained more of the history of dragonbloods to Isabella. âBut Lord Brendon Upshaw was the strongest dragonblood. His dragon magic was incredible. Itâs said he could control peopleâs minds. Lord Upshaw and his dragon Kerath, an evil black-red with a taste for humans, killed thousands before another dragonblood, Lady Meridith and her gold-silver Arterah, killed them. That was almost a thousand years ago, a dark time in the history of man and dragon. Many dark dragons used their dragonbloods to control humans as slaves,â said Sisera.
âThatâs awful,â said Isabella. She was sitting beside Sisera on her balcony and Sisera was giving her a dragonâs perspective on history. It seemed dragons were very detailed in their storiesâit was a dragonâs way of passing down knowledge from one generation to the next. Now Sisera was sharing the stories sheâd learned with Isabella.
Sisera shrugged. âIt was a different time. Dragons were more powerful; humans were weaker. As humans became more powerful, the balance of power shifted. But humans becoming more powerful than dragons hasnât stopped the killing of humans. Instead of death by dragon, humans kill each other far more often than dragons ever did. There were far fewer wars when dragons ruled the world, but I donât know that returning to such a state would be any better.â
âI think peace would be better,â said Isabella.
âPeace is a noble sentiment,â said Sisera in agreement. âBut peace in a kingdom, or between races, must be desired by all. You can want peace, but if your neighbor wants power, then peace will likely fail unless you are willing to give him all the power he desires. Or if he desires wealth, then you must give him everything you own.â
Isabella frowned. âThat is not right. If someone tries to rob you, you donât just give them everything. You stand up for what is yours.â
Sisera smiled. âPeace isnât simple is it? As a ruler, you will have to make decisions that may not be very peaceful at all.â
âWell, I am certainly not going to be like Lord Upshaw. Iâd rather be more like this Lady Meridith.â
âI shall tell you more of Lady Meridith another time, Raven has returned,â said Sisera.
Isabella turned and watched Raven walk into the camp. She saw blood on Ravenâs arm. âAre you okay?â
âIâm fine,â answered Raven. âThe blood is not mine. Most of it is Kaiâs. He took a blade to the belly. He dispatched the last three bandits, but there was one hidden in a corner who was able to sneak up on him.â
âIs Kaiâ¦?â Isabella hesitated.
âHe lives. He will mend.â
Isabella let out a relieved breath. âHe killed three warriors at once?â asked Isabella.
Raven nodded. âGreedy bastard. I was standing beside him, but the idiots charged us without shields. Three arrows from Kaiâs bow and they were down. Iâve never seen anyone fire a bow so fast before. Heâs okay with a sword, but far superior as an archer.
