Chapter Nine
“Darius wants my song.”
We were home, back in London. Well, Seph’s home, gathered in the living room where the spirit mage had first made a move on me. My broken ankle was set, aching to hell and back, and my split fingertips were sporting pink plasters.
Pranay was resting up after being stabbed, asleep in his room, but with no life-threatening damage done to him. Yet he was in pain. He was the only one absent from this little meeting.
Andy was sitting next to me, his face bruised, and also okay. No concussion, no damage to his skull.
They were okay.
Everyone was okay.
Kimberly had dealt with the poor victims of Darius—Owen and the woman who had stuck her head out of the window. Kimberly had used her necromancy magic to make her look as alive as she had been before her death and then sent her to Pantin, Paris, where she would be taken care of in the city’s necromancer HQ there.
Agents of the supernatural council had stepped in once again to clear up the mess. It left heavy unease in the pit of my stomach that they’d been involved for a second time.
The spirit mage’s cloak and daggers number that had hidden everything from the sight of all who were in or near Théâtre Bleu had affected Seph’s people too. Leaving the way wide open for Pranay and Seph to be set upon by other gnomes as they pursued the female gnome.
“But what does he want your song for?” Kimberly said. “The mage can already control things himself. There’d be no need to use your song. Unless he wanted to start shagging himself better.” She cocked an eyebrow, which referred to my still unhealed injury.
I didn’t want to think about that. There was no right moment to use that part of my power. My bodyguards were injured. That was that.
“Darius knows what it is this third part can do.”
Seph grunted. “Fucking water spirits do too. Why would they leave you in the dark about this?”
Every strand of destiny, all the finest details of how my life would play out on this journey. Was Darius gaining knowledge about this part of another twisted way for me to prove myself?
“Is there an herb or something that would help me?” I asked.
Seph shook his head. “Not that I know of.”
There was only one answer, and that was I still had a ton of worth to prove. It must be. I’d brought down an entire realm, after all. I was now the leader of the revolution, so to speak, but also me. There were some trust issues going on there with the spirits, it seemed. No matter what, I could still go the other way and embrace a different kind of fate. That was not how I saw things. Not at all. I gave myself enough credit. Others didn’t. Fine. I’d keep on fighting, then. I wasn’t straying from this path. I wanted to know what this power could do, to know the words of this prophecy, to destroy Darius and his father.
