CHAPTER 17

BARKIM’S HEART REVVED WHEN HE heard the knock on the door. He picked the gun up off the night stand and crept over to the window. He peeked through the curtains and saw just a single person standing out on the balcony of the motel. It was the person Barkim was expecting. He walked over to the door, quickly unlocking it. He stuck the gun out the door into the face of his visitor.

“You came by yourself,” he questioned aggressively.

“Yeah.”

Barkim swung the door wide open, snatching the visitor into the room and locking the door. “Sit down,” Barkim ordered aiming his gun. “How I know you ain’t tell nobody you were coming to meet me?”

“You don’t,” Lil Smoke said as he sat on the bed and scanned the room. “Man, you called me and said you had some information about my pops. So here I am. Now what’s up?”

Barkim took a seat in a chair across from Lil’ Smoke, while still keeping his gun on him. He was about to disappear for good but he had one last play to put together. Sin wanted him dead and after the shootout in the barbershop the feeling was mutual. He could never show his face again. So getting close enough to kill Sin himself was impossible. But Lil’ Smoke was a move Sin would never see coming.

Lil’ Smoke face was set in a grimace. He didn’t feel right meeting up with Barkim. He heard the rumors in the street that Barkim was a snitch but the allure of learning more about his father was too strong for the teenager to ignore.

“Whatchu know about what happened to your father?” Barkim quizzed the young man.

Lil’ Smoke jogged his memory for a second before speaking. “I know he was murdered by some niggas from Uptown or some Jamaicans. Some shit like that. Nobody really knows for sure,” he said.

“What if I told you I know who killed him?” Barkim notice Lil’ Smoke’s icy glare soften some. The young man sat straight up, unable to contain his interest. “What if I told you, his two best friends killed him?” Barkim said.

“My uncle Sin. And Beans?” Lil Smoke uttered slowly. “Nah,” he stood up preparing to walk out the door.

“I’m telling you the truth,” Barkim insisted. “Your pops was the man in the hood. He used to put that real work in. That’s how he got his name, Gunsmoke. He was getting money before all of us. He put us all on. Sin and Beans never liked being under him. You know how Sin is,” he gestured towards Lil’ Smoke. “He always got to be in charge.”

Lil’ Smoke shook his head in disbelief, not willing to except that what Barkim was saying was the truth. “I heard my pops, Sin and Beans all started together.”

“Who told you that, Sin?” Barkim said with a raised eyebrow then shook his head. “Why you think Beans keep his distance from you and your grandmother. Sin only look out for y’all out of guilt,” Barkim stressed.
