Seven months after their arrival in America, Phil drove Sandy back to the airport. They barely spoke during the two-hour trip. There was nothing to say, and there was too much to say. It should have been simple enough to be together as a family. She turned around three times to wave to him. He felt he must wake soon out of this dream and she’d be there, hugging him. Each time she turned around to wave, he was certain she was going to come back, but she didn’t. She vanished around the corner and he stood where he was, crying.
