Chapter 24: On the Back Porch
Saturday, 7:30 AM
Frank was asleep in his old room in the house, and Shane sat on the back porch, an empty coffee mug in his hands and silence in his ears. His thoughts were occupied with images of Jacinta, and he allowed himself to enjoy the peace the memory of her offered him.
For almost half an hour, he remained in his seat, sitting still enough to encourage several finches to land on a railing
Closer than they usually come, he mused. The dead tend to keep them away.
The birds took suddenly to wing, and Shane knew one of his ghosts had joined him.
âWhy isnât Miss Jacinta here?â Eloise demanded.
Shane glanced at her. âSheâs working, remember?â
The dead girl scoffed. âShe shouldnât have to work, Shane Ryan. You should take care of her.â
âIâd like to have her here all the time, doll,â Shane sighed, setting his coffee mug down between his thighs. He fished out his cigarettes, lit one, and looked at the dead child through the haze of cigarette smoke. âThing is, she likes working, and I donât want to ask her to stop. Not just because I miss her.â
Eloise folded her thin arms over her chest, harumphed, and stated, âMaybe she just wants you to ask.â
âWhat?â
âYou arenât very smart sometimes, Shane Ryan,â Eloise observed. âMaybe Miss Jacinta doesnât want to stop working, but maybe she does. Or maybe she would like you to ask. It would be considerate.â
âAre you really giving me lessons in my love life?â Shane asked.
She nodded.
âYouâre a dead child.â
âIâm older than you,â she retorted, âand Iâve listened to a great deal over the years. You are not a smart man.â
âProbably not,â he remarked, taking a drag on the cigarette, âbut thatâs the way it goes.â
âSo, will you?â
âWill I what?â he grumbled, straightening up.
âAsk her to stay with us?â
Shane hesitated, and then he shook his head. âNo, not yet. Thereâs work to do.â
âWhat kind of work?â
âI have to build a trap,â Shane informed her as he got to his feet.
âAre you taking Frank?â she asked.
âNo.â
âWhat should I tell him?â Eloise demanded. âYou know heâll want to know.â
Shane shrugged. âTell him Iâm building a trap. If he asks for what, tell him itâs for a rat.â
âYou arenât being very helpful, Shane Ryan,â she pouted.
âIâm sorry, doll, I really am.â Shane smiled apologetically. âIâll be home soon enough, okay?â
She nodded, hesitated, and then asked, âWill Miss Jacinta be here soon?â
âI hope like hell she will be,â Shane replied.
âI miss her,â the dead child confessed.
âYou and me both, doll,â Shane murmured. âYou and me both.â
