Although this air attack took place off Guadalcanal in August 1942, it shows what the attack on Force Z would have looked like, if a similar scene had been recorded. Here, Type 1 bombers launch low-level torpedo attacks on American warships.

Now, with Ozawa heading north and Phillips to the south-west, the two groups of ships were heading away from each other. It was surprising that the Chokai and her consorts hadn’t been picked up on radar. After all, the Type 279 radar on the Prince of Wales should have been able to detect a contact the size of an enemy cruiser at a range of 20 miles. However, radar was an imprecise tool, and dependent on atmospheric conditions. Therefore, both forces turned away without sighting the enemy. It is interesting to speculate what might have happened if the two sides had clashed that evening, but the opportunity quickly passed. Instead, on the British flagship, Admiral Phillips had his own decision to make – the toughest of his life. It didn’t just affect Force Z – it could also determine the very future of the British Empire.
