Chapter Twenty-Two
The toxin moving through his leg slowed them further. It wasnât bad enough to prevent walking, it just destabilized his footing. Heâd used the time theyâd spent harvesting the beast to rest in the hopes that it would reduce the sensory damage, yet it lingered.
When they finally started walking again, the formation moved slower⦠and he could tell Esme wasnât happy with her own failings. Her attempts to apologize had been going on for over an hour now, something Pelas had been trying to curtail.
âYou canât keep apologizing⦠For one, itâs annoying, for another it was a creature designed for stealth. Even the best tracker is going to miss a creature once in a while,â Pelas was saying.
Gideon noticed she had a tendency to wave her hands when she spoke. At the moment she was gesturing wildly. Given she had her pistol gripped in hand, he wished she wasnât.
âThe hunting of Tower beasts is my reason for being. I vowed to protect your household from the creatures of whatever floor you were on. To fail is a grave thing,â Esme said in return. Her mechanical delivery was muffled by the fact that she was using the speakers on her helmet to speak.
I wonder why she uses her helmet to transmit vocally?
Then again, the internal units werenât comfortable. His throat was still itching from having the machine implant itself. Maybe Dekelleyn physiology isnât made for subvocalization? He flicked his eyes to Caprica and saw her walking backwards, checking their backtrail.
His optic began highlighting various plants it deemed valuable, so he dragged his gaze away. He wasnât going to waste his time trying to harvest plants that could kill him, especially when Zee needed him. The clerk had stirred twice while they walked.
Both times she started whimpering in pain a few seconds before she actually woke. Theyâd used the last of the sedatives Caprica carried to keep her under. Even with the healing injection theyâd given her, her hands were still charred to the bones.
The conversation was cycling back around, and Gideon had had enough. âHow long until we reach the medic?â he asked. Pelas twitched at being interruptedâthough her argument with Esme thankfully came to an end.
Esme lifted her forearm and pressed several commands into the bracer. The globe of energy returned and spun while flashing symbols formed within. After a few seconds, she dismissed the tool.
âWeâre almost there. The station is commanded by Captain Foster Terminus, a medical specialist who should be able to help Zee. Follow me,â Esme said. She resumed walking and Gideon followed as best he could. Having to watch his step was almost second nature for him at this point.
Their branch split ahead. Gideon stared at what appeared to be a thick, walnut-like growth that was oozing blue, luminous slime and slowly came to a halt as he took in the oddity. Strangely, that growth didnât cause Esme to pause. She walked past it and headed down the wooden beam toward the lower level.
The others kept going, and Gideon shook his head as he started moving once more.
