Changi Museum & Chapel

Although shifted from the original Changi Prison site in 2001, the Changi Museum and Chapel remains a powerful ode to the WWII Allied POWs who suffered horrifically at the hands of the invading Japanese. Stories are told through photographs, letters, drawings and other fascinating artefacts. The tattered shoes of a civilian prisoner prove unexpectedly moving, while a tiny Morse code transmitter hidden inside a matchbox is a testament to the prisoners' ingenuity.

The museum is home to full-sized replicas of the famous Changi Murals painted by POW Stanley in the old POW hospital, the originals of which are off limits in Block 151 of the nearby Changi Army Camp. The museum’s centrepiece is a replica of the original Changi Chapel built by inmates as a focus for worship and as a sign of solidarity. Tucked into the walls behind the altar, its cross made of ammunition casings, are mementos left by visitors – white crosses, red poppies, handwritten notes and colourful paper cranes.

Bus 2 from Victoria St or Tanah Merah MRT will take you past the museum on its way to Changi Village. Alight at bus stop 97201, also labelled 'opp. Changi Chapel Museum'.
