CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
The binoculars were cold against Kieran’s cheeks. He twisted the thick dial until the faces of both women sharpened into view. A young, cheeky hospital worker escorted his beloved to her car, petite and curvy next to slender, tall Valerie.
Something about the girl looked familiar. He was sure he’d seen her before, and his brain twisted the possibilities.
Valerie opened her car door. Kieran’s hands wobbled, preventing the waif’s lips from being read, but the two seemed to be in disagreement. Valerie shook her head and stepped into the car, flexing her strong calves, black skirt swinging under her black raincoat. The waif looked dejected, offering one last plug for her side, but Valerie closed the door without response. Kieran heard nothing of it; the rain and shuffling of clothes obscured the conversation through his not-worth-the-outrageous-price listening device.
He set the binoculars aside and cradled Valerie’s eye in the palm of his hand, stroking the length of the capillaries that streaked the whiteness. Watching her drive the perimeter of the lot, his heart quickened as she approached, merely feet past Kieran.
Their eyes locked. His breath hitched.
Kieran twirled her eye faster and harder, pressing the film, rolling it across his fingers, left to right, speed growing in tandem with his excitement.
She sees me. She’s looking for me. She waited for me.
He held her gaze and locked the energy of her stare inside his heart.
Valerie seemed to almost shudder.
A sword sliced his chest.
Surely, he was mistaken. It was far more likely she was bitten by the chill of the fall rain.
Valerie pulled her collar high over her cheeks as she drove on.
Panting, tears of frustration welled in his eyes. He placed her eye on the cushioned cradle and turned over the ignition. The car started with the rumble of a broken exhaust. Kieran followed her trail, remaining a steady two blocks behind until his wish for audio contact was granted. His earpiece picked up a one-sided phone conversation, clear as a bell in the sealed vacuum of her car.
Bingo. He heard the nugget of dreams.
He pulled off into a deserted gas station that professed to sell Coca-Cola, apparently rancid, antiqued Coca-Cola given the condition of the sign, made a U-turn over crumbling, weed-sprouted concrete, and headed back to Sinai General.
The waif looked familiar because he’d seen her many times years before, perhaps even daily. Photos of her eighth birthday party, a beach trip at age twelve, and a brace-faced smile behind the wheel of her first car flooded into his awareness; treasured images, the kind a proud father would paste all over his office, the office of his mentor, Dr. Jonas Kraig.
From the sound of it, this Kraig woman offered Valerie critical insight into the Destabilizer, information Kieran was convinced was far better off in his hands.
