Chapter 13
Eventually a correctional officer came and escorted Chase out of the interrogation room. As they walked through the maze of hallways and holding cells, they came upon Blondie and Ponytail, standing in front of a cell with silver bars as thick as Chaseâs thigh. Inside the cell stood the tattooed giant of man Chase has seen earlier. The man had massive biceps and shoulders. His chestnut brown hair was long, and went with dark eyes set back deep in his head.
Blondie and Ponytail were engaged in a deep conversation with the prisoner. As Chase walked by, they all stopped talking. Blondie gazed at Chase with flat, dead eyes. No hint of his previous rage and violence lingered. Ponytail smirked at Chase, his eyes dancing with unbridled glee. The prisoner glared at Chase, open hate and contempt filling his eyes. The prisoner took a long, exaggerated breath through his nose. He inhaled the air through the bar as Chased walked by. He exhaled slowly, and closed his eyes, as if savoring a drink of fine wine. When he re-opened his eyes, malice filled their view, he never took them off of Chase until the heavy metal door clanged shut behind him.
Chase was placed in a booking center, and told to sit on a cold, hard, metal bench. There were many single cells that were filled with an assortment of societyâs most colorful, and desperate criminals. Chase spent the next hour sitting on his bench, watching as individuals were each brought to the large desk at the center of the room and systematically questioned their identity and booked them into the system. The range of questions and answers amused Chase and kept him entertained as he waited. Apparently, the majority of the people brought into the facility were frequent fliers and tried to make the process interesting.
After a while the parade of criminals lost its luster, and Chase found himself pondering his situation. The truth of the matter stared him right in the face, he wasnât sure the girls were better off having him in their lives. Besides killing their two vampire masters, what had he really done to help them? Bought some clothes, played maître dâ while they exacted revenge on some of their old clients. Not exactly a huge contribution to their cause. And now, the FBI and some anonymous vampires were using him to find the girls. He was a liability, and he knew it. They were better off without him He was human, not a supernatural being that could handle the fights that were coming. It made sense to cut out now, before the emotional toll became greater.
Chase pondered the thoughts spinning through his head at breakneck speed. He continued his quiet moral quandary, and watched as new player came into the booking area. She did not fit in with the rest of assorted criminals in the jail. Her short blonde was cut in a conservative manner just to the bottom of her ears. She wasnât short, but wasnât tall either.
