CANDACE

I make it to the beginning of my block before I have to start running.

The wind, which was already whipping with intensity, suddenly sends forth a gust so powerful it nearly knocks me off my feet; then, the rain that was already pelting down steadily slams from the dark overhanging clouds like a waterfall.

I let out a yelp and run to my door as fast as my legs can carry me.

The hurricane we’ve been warned about for days is finally here.

Luckily, I’m still mostly dry underneath my raincoat once I get inside. Classes have already been cancelled for tomorrow, and with the gusts of wind blasting against the house and the rain beating on the ceiling, it strikes me as the perfect time for a cozy cup of tea.

Once the tea is brewed, I let it steep while I wander to the front window and look outside. Everything is hazy on the other side thanks to the torrents of rain streaming down the glass. But I still see figures scurrying along down our street, not quite as lucky as I was to get home just moments after it really started to come down.

Luckily, everyone’s wearing a poncho or a raincoat with a hood. I mean, every source of information has been inundating us with warnings that the hurricane was going to arrive today, so surely no one would have gone outside without something to protect them from the rain. No matter how careless they usually are.

With that thought in my head, the front door flies open and Ryder rushes inside.

Completely drenched in rain. He looks like he just jumped into a pool and dunked his head under.

No raincoat, no poncho; not even a regular coat or even a hoodie. No umbrella goes without saying; though, to be fair, an umbrella would probably be impossible for anyone to manage in current wind conditions.

“Sheesh!” Ryder exclaims out of breath as he kicks the door closed behind him. “Where’d this rain come from?”

I quirk an eyebrow. “Uh, the hurricane?” I turn the statement into a question because I can’t believe he could have got away without hearing about it.

“Hurricane? There’s a hurricane?”

“Uh, yeah. The one they’ve been warning about for five straight days.”

Ryder looks thoughtful for a moment, but his carefree expression soon replaces that. He shrugs nonchalantly. “Huh. I guess I don’t pay attention to the news.”

“That’s a surprise,” I snark, turning back to fetch my tea, which is perfectly steeped by now.

“Oohh, tea! Can I have some?”

“That depends,” I say, turning to face him with a stern look. “Do you have some of your own teabags in the cabinet somewhere that you can make yourself?”

Ryder puts on a puppy dog frown, like he’s a whining golden retriever begging for a doggy treat. “Please,” he says in the most pathetic voice he can summon. “I need a hot drink. I’m wet and cold.”

“It’s my tea. Remember our agreement?”

He wraps his arms around himself, pretending to shiver and he walks towards the kitchen hunched over like he’s eighty years old.
