Chapter 6

Rafaelo della Fanzio worried all the way to our little apartment. He alternately cursed with the imaginative furor of a hot-blooded Latin, then wept in utter despair. He was a multi-millionaire, he rambled, half under his breath, yet here he was slinking back through the mists of early dawn to take refuge in a tenement with his sister and a girl he’d never known until a few days ago. His family would all be killed, one after the other. It was useless to fight the Mafia.

And yet he would fight. He would go down sword in hand battling his enemies. He would defy them. He flicked his thumbnail against his teeth, in that deadliest of all Italian insults. Then he shook his head and groaned, saying that it was all to no avail.

We got him into the old tenement building with out anyone seeing him. I made him get into bed. He had been through a lot, there were dark half-moons under his eyes.

“Just sleep,” I told him. “You’re upset, and you, can’t think straight when your mind is pulled one way and then another. Leave everything to me. You aren’t used to battling the Mafia. I am.”

I stared at Ines who leaned a shoulder against the jamb and eyed her brother with tears in her eyes. “I’d tell you to get some sleep, too, Ines, but I think you’d better report for work with me.”

On the way, I cautioned her about saying anything about last night. “Our story is that we were there, if we’re asked. We know the things that happened. How Rafaelo was brought forward to be slaughtered—remember, you don’t know him — and how a voice spoke ordering the acolytes to tie him up. You recall the orgy and whatever else took place. Pretend ignorance, if you have to, just say you were so excited all you could think about was the men you were having.”

Ines made a wry face. I grinned at her. “It’s just pretend, honey. Let them see how good an actress you are.”

The shipyard was not the orderly place it was on most days, this morning after the Black Mass. Rumors were flying everywhere. The big boss was dead. The devil had carried him off. He had shot himself in despair. He had absconded with ten million dollars and left the shipyards and tankers and freighting line in bankruptcy. Such were the stories Ines and I heard as we went from one group to another.

Everywhere was chaos. No work was being done. Each worker looked to the other for direction and guidance, and nobody dared to take the initiative. Even the executives were confused, they could not contact Rafaelo della Fanzio for Orders.

This was when Silverfinger made his appearance. He came striding in through the main gates with two of his husky bodyguards on either side of him, Swaggering along. Silverfinger himself was grave, but his button-men wore big grins. The Della Fanzio Corporation was as good as in the Mafia pocket, those grins seemed to say.
