Edsel smiled when Hope ushered Cori into the bakery.
âMy, my,â Edsel said. âDonât you two look nice. Youâre all dressed up for the wedding.â
âWeâre just going to the reception,â Cori said.
âThe reception,â Edsel corrected herself. âWell, you two will outshine the bride ⦠which is never a good thing.â
âWe will hardly outshine anyone,â Hope said. âBut youâre very kind to say so.â
With Coriâs help, Hope managed to move the wedding cake from the cooler to the back of her SUV. She was tempted to put Cori in with the box, to keep it from toppling over, but that would leave Cori out of a seatbelt, and that would be dangerous.
So, Hope drove very, very slowly to the country club. She and Cori carried the cake to the ballroom, thankful that the club had an elevator. They unboxed and placed the cake in the center of a long table that held the two plates, two goblets, a knife, two forks, and two of everything the bride and groom would need. Everything was silver and shiny, the way the wedding planner wanted it.
âThe cake is absolutely perfect,â the wedding planner gushed. She was about Hopeâs age but thinner and wearing black-rimmed glasses that made her look bookish. In a tan dress, the wedding planner was not going to turn heads, which was her intent. Wedding planners who stole the show didnât get a lot of work, no matter how successful the wedding was. Would-be brides and their mothers hired the wedding planner to remain in the background.
âI have to get back to the church,â the wedding planner said. âYou can never trust the photographer or videographer to do their jobs right. Theyâll probably get the scaffolding in the background, which would ruin everything.â
âScaffolds?â Hope asked.
âThe church is scheduled for a refurbishment, and there are stacks of scaffolds in the side chapel. The wedding is the last event scheduled, and the brideâs mother is the only reason the church is still open. Youâve met her, so you understand. Hang around, get something to drink. Everyone will arrive within the hour.â
Hope thought that if the wedding planner couldnât trust the people she hired, then the wedding planner needed to hire other people. Still, Hope and Cori grabbed two soft drinks and sat at a table in the rear. Waiting wasnât Hopeâs strong suit. Cori was better off, as she had brought her phone.
âWhat is happening in the twitter world?â Hope asked.
âYou should join it and find out,â Cori answered.
âNo, thanks. You can tell me what I need to know.â
Cori made a face. âWell, in the twitter world, there is some talk about Dad.â
Hopeâs smile faded. âThere is? What does it say?â
âWell, itâs not an it. Itâs a reporter back in Ohio, who said the accident looks suspicious.â
âSuspicious, how?â
Cori rolled her eyes and handed over her phone. âWhy donât you read it. I have to use the restroom.â
Hope took the phone and frowned at the tiny print. How could Cori read this? She stared and read, and what she read made her stomach clench.
