A sound woke him. Groggy, Zayne opened his eyes. Not moving, he saw Veronica dressed in her clothes he had zapped to the chair, standing at the door with her back to him. She had pulled her hair back into a braid. She glanced back. He closed his eyes almost all the way and pretended to sleep as he watched her. Although the shadows danced around her, he could see the indecision on her face clearly. Her thoughts raced through his mind, fast and random. He wanted to calm her fears and tell her everything would be okay. He didn’t. It would be her choice. He had promised to give her space and time. Foolishly, he hadn’t expected her to take it. Veronica opened the door and left quickly.

Zayne sat up against the headboard. The sheets flowed off him. The now closed door seemed to mock him. The need to call her to come back was on his tongue, but he knew he couldn’t. He gasped at the pain that filled him at her leaving.

I didn’t think it would hurt this much to let her choose.

“Why does it hurt so much? I can’t survive the pain if she doesn’t return to me!” The raw pain in his soul echoed in his voice, shaking him to the core.

The sound of silk filled the room, sliding along the walls. It came to him and wrapped around him, lowering him to the bed. Burrowing into the embrace, he let it comfort him although he knew nothing truly would until Veronica came back. If she came back, he amended. No matter what she decided—yes or no—through their connection he would know when she did. Not what she chose, but that she had decided. If she didn’t come back to him, then he would let the silk take him away. The room went dark as the shadows crept over and the silk tightened around him, shielding him from the wait.
