Heather’s voice was lower, softer. “I only did it because I wanted to be nigh to Fen.”

“What does Fen have to do with the matter?”

“Everything. Do ye ken how much I envy ye? To be able to wrap yer arms ’bout that lad as a human woman, as a mother? The most I can do is live through yer experiences with him.”

“Um … .” This didn’t make any sense to Cassia. “Is that it then?”

“And I donnae like the way ye flirt with me Kelly.”

Cassia cringed. She was being lectured by a jealous ghost. “I don’t flirt with Master Kelly—um Kellan. He’s the one you should be cross with. Upon my oath, I have no interest in him.”

The ghost went on. “One minute ye’re kissing him, the next ye throw him aside for that daft lad, Lyle. Make up yer mind.”

“I don’t kiss him! He’s the one who’s been trying to kiss me.” Unless she had when she sleepwalked. The very idea made her want to retch.

The ghost let out an indignant snort. Maybe Cassia had insulted her. The ghost leaned closer, chilling Cassia. “Are ye carrying his babe?”

“What? I’m not … . You think I’m—no, really—”

“When’s the last time ye had your moon cycle? Have ye been throwing up every morn?”

This had to be a bad dream. “Well, not every morning … .”

“Things suddenly smell bad, ye’re tired more, and ye’re hungry all the time. It’s most normal. Do ye ken who the father is?”

Cassia let out an angry huff. She was not pregnant! Who did this ghost think she was to ask her such questions?

“I see. Apparently nae. Do ye ken how far along you are? Did it happen out here or back in Hapshire?”
