Ellen was alone in the room. Her 9mm was disassembled on a cleaning cloth spread out on the table, and she carefully picked up the slide and wiped it down, her mind elsewhere.

Well, she thought, it’s time to make a decision. What am I going to do? Do I keep up this charade and pretend like I don’t know anything about Worthe and his damned Village? Can I really kill her? Is there a way out of this?

Ellen shook her head, set the slide down, and lifted the extractor. Do I just give David a ring and say, Hey, guess who I’m crashing with?

No. I can’t do that, either. This is ridiculous!

Angrily, she finished cleaning the extractor, then she began the process of reassembling the pistol. The calm which she usually enjoyed after caring for the weapon was absent. Ellen picked up the magazine, slid it into the pistol and chambered a round.

I don’t want to have to use this, Ellen thought, hating the desperation and fear in herself. But if she reacts badly, what else am I going to do? How else do I handle her?

Not with a loaded gun. At least, not all the way. One to wound. That’s it.

Ellen ejected the magazine but kept the chambered round. The weapon felt light and ineffectual in her hands.

Which is much better than it being loaded with a full magazine, Ellen thought.

She heard the lock on the door click, and Ellen turned to face Joyce.
