Chapter 29
Gaby
Friday 10 January, 11.30 a.m. Swansea Police Station
DS Bill Davis was just one of those blokes. Gaby could be six-foot-three with legs up to her armpits and a smile to sink a thousand ships and it wouldn’t make a bit of difference to the way he treated her. All he saw was her sex but that was his problem and not hers.
They’d settled down opposite the first of the two boys in the interview room. Yes, boys because neither of them was more than eighteen – nineteen at a push. David Prestwich and Arthur Norman, both studying geography at Swansea University and both fanatical cliff divers.
‘So, run it by me again, Mr Prestwich,’ Bill said, picking up his pen and tapping the centre of his pad, making a fine series of random dots. ‘Why cliff diving and why Abereiddy’s Blue Lagoon in particular?’
Gaby raised both eyebrows but there was little she could do other than add to the list of questions she’d already jotted down earlier. It was clear that Bill hadn’t made any effort to read up on the topic, her mind swinging back to the hasty, albeit, thorough search she’d just carried out on cliff diving – something she’d known nothing about until half an hour previously. She settled back in her chair, stretching her feet out under the table, her eyes trained on the lad opposite.
‘The where is easy. The Blue Lagoon is a world-famous cliff diving site. The why? Why not? The world is full of risk-adverse behaviour. Throwing ourselves over a cliff is our way of raising a couple of fingers in the air, pardon the inference, ma’am.’
‘Right! Moving on,’ Bill said, his brows beetling. ‘Can you tell us in your own words just what happened on the day in question?’
‘There’s not a lot to tell, actually. We’d been diving about half an hour and had one jump each under our belts. It was just a normal jump, you know.’ He started playing with the silver ring on his thumb. ‘We’re used to cold water dives and the great thing about this time of year is the bonus of not having your heart stop when you plunge it into ice-cold water,’ he added with a smile.
Gaby hunched forward, her gaze trained on his face. He’s a clown with his winks and jokey ways but, underneath it all, he’s anxious or nervous, or both. Shifting in her seat she stared across at Bill, willing him to ask the kind of questions he should be asking instead of this drivel. Questions like why the Blue Lagoon at this time of year when the world diving championships were months ago? Abereiddy, while pretty, wasn’t the centre of the universe and even less so in January. So, why would two lads shift from the heady nightlife to be found in and around Swansea for a weekend in St David’s? If it was just for the diving then surely they could have done the return trip in a day instead of having to make a weekend of it.
