I should probably admit that the second leg of our trip wasn’t quite as bad as the first. Tristan was all out of poop and not feeling well, so he slept most of the flight. However, I would also like it to be noted that by the time we landed in Salt Lake, I realized I’d been sweating profusely, and I wondered if connecting flights with a two-year-old was comparable to competing in an Ironman. I know this sounds like an exaggeration, but I once read an article about a medical study that found toddlers are as fit as endurance athletes. Be sure to mention that the next time your doctor asks if you exercise regularly.

I was exhausted, yet somehow I managed to muster up the strength to keep Tristan from climbing onto the baggage carousel.

Once we had our luggage, car seats, and stroller and we were safely inside my in-laws’ van, I promised myself I’d never fly with a toddler again—but I knew, somehow, that it was unavoidable.

If I go to hell, it will be flying with a two-year-old for eternity.

Just before pulling away from the airport, my father-in-law turned around in the driver’s seat and asked, “How was your flight?”

Neither of us answered. Mel and I just looked at him with cold, dead eyes.
