“So, are you two friends?”

Chapter Nine

Crystal was his last massage client of the day.

He set up his table in her living room, then prepared them both a glass of water while Crystal got comfortable.

Two minutes later he returned. Crystal lay on the table, back free, her phone on speaker resting on the floor. “Social butterflies are my Leos next week, fluttering from one gathering to the next. And I finally get to meet my son’s boyfriend.”

“You’ve met Jamie before!” Theo said. “There were a crazy number of inappropriate questions involved. And cumin pods.”

“I met him as your friend last time. This time will be different. Oh, he’ll have more charming to do, even more questions to answer.”

Theo groaned. “Mom, I’m begging you.”

“I can’t wait to see you all.”

Percy cleared his throat, holding up two options for Crystal to choose from: lavender or vanilla. She lifted her head and pointed to vanilla, then dived right back into her conversation.

Percy shook his head and started on the problem areas of Crystal’s shoulders.

“What is the plan for the Fourth?” Theo asked.

Percy answered that one. It gave him the opportunity to tell Theo he would be there after all. Tradition, and all that. Nothing to do with his new venture into environmentalism. “The Glovers are hosting the barbecue this year.”

“Percy? What on earth are you doing with my mother?”

“He’s rubbing me down. He’s very good at it. Massage is such a great way to relax. But no doubt you’re getting enough of that with Jamie.”

“If this is heading where I think it is, I’m hanging up now.”

“Hush. Physical intimacy is a beautiful thing, and—” Theo started whistling, and Percy swallowed a laugh as Crystal lectured her son on the importance of giving and receiving. At some point, Theo shrieked, and the line died.

Crystal sighed. “I didn’t think I had raised a prude.”

Percy moved onto Crystal’s other shoulder. “I’m sure it’s less about being prudish and more about being horrified at hearing such details from his mother. How’re your shoulders feeling?”

“You may have a point there. My shoulders are probably good enough that I should say yes to Champey. She asked me to play tennis with her, and I’ve put off answering because it’s been years since I’ve played. I don’t even own a racket anymore.”

Percy slowed his touch. Champey used to play every week with his aunt. They’d always come back to Abby’s place where Percy would hustle up afternoon tea.

“Tell me how it’s going with your house?” Crystal asked. “Mr. Feist thought you were selling, but he must be mistaken. You are far too close to the cul-de-sac to run away.”

Percy’s tongue clucked against the roof of his mouth. He should tell her he was leaving; should tell her how hard it was to see Abby in every one of the neighbors and not have her here.
