Mike’s Tip

When working on bigger pieces, or on fabric, a quilter’s tracing wheel can be used as an alternative to a smaller pounce wheel. These have a larger wheel with more space between the spikes, which is better for longer lines, and the holes are further apart, given that less detailing is required at scale.

Pressure Transfer

Pressure transfer can be used on relatively smooth substrates when only one transfer of a design is required. Powdered material can be added to the back of an existing design drawing on paper, or transfer paper (e.g. carbon or graphite paper) can be inserted between the drawing and the substrate. Applying pressure to the lines of the design transfers the material on the back of the drawing, or in the transfer paper, to the substrate.

Carbon or graphite paper, or a product such as Saral Transfer Paper, can be used for pressure transfer. You can also create your own transfer paper by chalking the back of a piece of kraft or tracing paper, or coating it with pounce powder, shaking or blowing off any excess. You can also use other materials to coat the back of the paper: pastels, or even grease pencils or regular soft graphite pencils for smaller pieces. When working on lighter substrates, use a dark pounce powder or charcoal as the transfer material.

Your choice of transfer material (pounce powder, chalk, charcoal, etc.) can also be applied to the back of an existing drawing for direct transfer. Creating a bespoke transfer paper instead of using a direct transfer will keep your original drawings relatively clean and free of dust for storage and future use.

Pressure transfer is a good method when you only need to transfer a design once. When multiple copies of a design need to be painted, however, it is worth investing the time to create a pounce pattern from your drawing.
