A: Oh, yes. My brother and I also had some of the classics, Kenneth Grahame’s The Wind in the Willows, Beatrix Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Q: Peter Rabbit, like your own work, is for the younger ages. Why do you think it has become a classic?

A: It’s a very good adventure story. Things happen and all the emotions become involved. It starts off with a safe sort of family situation. The mother goes off shopping and tells the children to be good. But there’s the one little rebel, Peter, who does the very thing he’s been told not to do; he goes into Mr. MacGregor’s garden. I’m sure children identify with Peter. So a slight sort of tension builds because you know he shouldn’t be there, and because something’s looming. Then he’s seen and there’s the great chase, and you feel very sorry for poor old Peter Rabbit as he gets caught up in the netting. Then comes the relief at the end when he escapes. It’s not a morality tale, just good earthy naughtiness.
