The current economic crisis has all of us carefully scrutinizing the comings and goings of our money—even at church. Despite the bad economy, or maybe because of it, a theology called the “prosperity gospel” (PG) is gaining hold in many churches. Simply put, the prosperity gospel says that tithes and donations given to a church will result in financial blessings for the giver. I will have much more to say about this movement soon. For now, please take the somewhat tongue-in-cheek “PG Self-Examination Quiz” developed by Jonathan L. Walton, professor of religion at the University of California at Riverside.1 The quiz will help you determine, in Walton’s words, “whether or not you are a member of a prosperity gospel church and whether your pastor is a prosperity teacher.” Have fun!
