Chapter 10

Serena grabbed her stomach as she fell to the ground inside the dispensary. Merek helped her to her feet before she glanced up at the timer above the door. “It’s dark. How do we know what happens to them?”

“You don’t,” the caretaker said, causing them to turn around. His golden eyes roamed over Serena’s body. “You resurrected a lost realm. I didn’t believe it was possible.”

“What now?” Serena glanced at Merek, then at the caretaker.

The caretaker shrugged. “You’ve fulfilled your debt and are free to return to your own world.”

Merek stepped forward. “She can’t. Serena is were and my mate. She could infect her realm with the were virus.”

The caretaker looked at Serena. “Yours is the last fertile realm. Lucifer owns Merek. He is tied to the garden, but you have a choice. You may choose to stay here with him, but if you do so, you’ll be bound to the terms and conditions of the garden—forever.”

She placed her hand on Merek’s. “I can’t let what happened in that broken world happen to my home. I go where my mate does.”

Merek’s eyes narrowed on the caretaker. “You didn’t need me for the artifact. You wanted me to turn her. Why?”

“I needed her to live.” The caretaker’s eyes flared.

Serena glanced between the angry men. “Why me?”

The caretaker’s eyes softened when he looked at her. “You’re special. I wanted you to have a life.”

“Was my pregnancy part of the plan?”

The caretaker sucked in a breath. “That’s not possible. The child’s conception would’ve happened in the garden and...”

“I’m pregnant,” Serena said.

“You are the mother.” The caretaker’s eyes flared with golden flecks. “I wanted the prophecy to be true, but the chances of those elements coming together at the perfect time were impossible.”

Serena smoothed the robe she wore. “The pastor said my child cannot grow in Lucifer’s Garden. What are the consequences of me staying here?”

The caretaker rubbed his chin. “You must return to your world long enough for your child to be born. Once she’s born, you must continue to travel.”

Serena frowned. “How do we travel if we aren’t returning to the garden? Merek says that excessive travel makes you sick.”

The caretaker pulled an amulet from beneath his dark suit. “This is my personal amulet. It is the last of its kind. Unlike the dispensary, it will choose the next realm randomly. It will protect you from the effects of realm travel. Hold Merek’s hand before you activate it.” He held it out to Serena.

She took the amber stone that looked like a cross between Topaz and Opal. “It’s beautiful. Why is it the last of its kind?”

The caretaker’s eyes flickered with gold. “The amulet only works if its owner is alive. My species has passed. When your child is born, the amulet will form a small crystal. Gift it to your daughter. Make sure she never takes it off. It will shroud her from Lucifer.”

Serena’s heart stuttered. “You think Lucifer will hurt her?”

The caretaker took Serena’s hand. “I can stall Lucifer for a couple of human years, but once he’s aware of her existence, he won’t stop hunting her.
