The driver eyed me warily as we neared the gates.

“Darlin’, are you sure this is where you wanna be?” He asked nervously. “There ain’t much around these parts.”

“I’m sure,” I said flatly, jumping out of the car as he rolled to a stop.

“Ya want me to wait?” He called after me, but I ignored him as I moved purposefully toward the entranceway of the compound.

I could make out two men at the front, their forms tensing as I approached, but before their features could come into proper view, something grabbed my arm.

Gasping, I instinctively wrenched my arm away and spun to look at Trevor. He frowned at me.

“I thought Holly was kidding,” he grumbled. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Me!?” I yelled back. “What the hell do you think you’re doing? You went through my stuff after everything I did for you?”

Shock overtook Trevor’s face, and I folded my arms firmly over my chest, my eyes narrowing to challenge him.

“What? Are you going to deny it?” I demanded. “I know you did.”

“You need to keep your voice down,” Trevor growled, reaching for my arm again. “And come with me.”

I was about to refuse, but I suddenly realized how conspicuous I was acting, out there in the middle of the night, yelling like a crazy woman. The Uber driver remained in place, his eyes shadowed with worry, and I could hear the two guards approaching.

“Is everything all right here, Lt. Washington?” One of the young men asked.

“Everything’s fine,” Trevor said crisply, steering me toward the gate. I felt foolish and allowed him to guide me inside the compound. “She’s just visiting.”

Not another word was exchanged between us until I was marched through the gate and up toward a double wide that I realized was Trevor’s apartment.

“You live here?” I heard myself asking, although I wasn’t sure what else I expected. I had never been on an army base before, but something told me that this was not typical somehow.

“When I’m in between missions,” Trevor replied, opening the door. I looked about and saw that his unit was not much bigger than my apartment.

“You can’t just come up here like this,” Trevor chided me. My initial fury resurfaced.

“And you can’t just go snooping through people’s stuff!” I shot back, glowering at him. Trevor sighed again and nodded for me to enter, but I didn’t move.

“It wasn’t my intention to go through your stuff,” he replied, his voice gravelly. “I’m sorry.”

I hadn’t expected that as an answer, and for a moment, I was disarmed but my guard was still up. I had already made the mistake of trusting him once, and he had betrayed that trust.

“Why did you do it?” I insisted, not wanting to forgive him yet. “Were you just waiting for me to leave?”

“Of course not.” He sounded annoyed at the suggestion. “I was just trying to walk around and get my bearings. I…I just stumbled on the box, and curiosity got the best of me.”

He sounded embarrassed to his credit, and he didn’t meet my eyes.
