Chapter Ten
Zeus
âWhat the hell are you doing here, Darric?â I hissed, feeling the hairs on the back of my neck rise.
âDo you really need to ask me that?â he retorted furiously. âYouâve been AWOL, avoiding us.â
âHow did you even find me?â I shot back, vaguely aware of Lori watching me from across the restaurant.
âFind My Phone.â
I groaned to myself, wondering why I hadnât just turned the device off, but it was too late to worry about that now.
âThis is clearly not a good time. Go home and weâll talk later.â
Darricâs dark eyes moved toward where Lori and Kenzie sat, his mere gaze at them sending me into a tailspin. I didnât want my brother or anyone else to know about Lori. If I had, I would have told him.
âWhat is this?â he demanded, moving his eyes back toward me. âWho are they?â
âItâs none of your damned business,â I growled, folding my arms defensively over my chest. âYou really need to leave.â
I could feel my anger bubbling to the surface, particularly when Darric was staring at me with such contempt.
âAre you on a date?â Darric demanded, dubiousness flooding his voice. âWith a mom?â
âI just told you to mind your own business, Dare,â I rasped, knowing that my ire was going to lead to terrible consequences if I didnât get rid of him soon.
âAre you out of your mind?â Darric snapped, his tone growing louder. âYou have no control over yourself these days. What were you thinking getting involved with anyone, let alone a woman with a child?!â
I gritted my teeth, the poke of my fangs eminent.
Oh gods, not now, I thought, swallowing the overwhelming need to shift. Not here, not in front of Kenzie and Lori. Sheâs already worried enough about me being a wolf. I canât confirm her suspicions.
âYou need to come back to the base with me,â Darric said flatly. âAnd we need to figure out what weâre going to do about you.â
I scoffed.
âIâm not going anywhere with you!â
Our eyes clashed and even without speaking, my brotherâs eyes seemed to taunt me.
Is he trying to goad me into shifting here?
My heart pounded in my chest and the roar of blood rushing into my ears made my head dizzy. I knew I had barely two minutes before I lost control and Darric was showing no signs of leaving.
It was game over. Lori and Kenzie were going to see the terrifying side of me and I would never get her back again.
Suddenly, I saw Darricâs eyes darken as he looked over my shoulder but before I could turn to look, I felt soft fingers curl around my clenched fist.
âIs everything okay over here?â Lori asked softly. Like a wave had swept through the dining room, I was abruptly encompassed in peace. Gone was the smothering desire to shed my human skin and lunge at my brother. I felt nothing but calm.
âWeâre having a private conversation,â Darric said flatly but Lori did not move and I unfurled my hand to hold hers.
âYou interrupted our evening,â I barked at my brother.
