Chapter 13 - Cole

“You have got to be kidding me!”

Emily’s exclamation startled Cole. It had been the last thing he expected her to say when they stopped walking outside a psychic’s shop in a small human town just outside of Silverdale.

“What’s the matter? Didn’t the tracking spell work?” he asked, feeling his gut beginning to churn. They couldn’t possibly have traveled all this way just for Emily to tell him that the spell had failed, that it had brought them to the wrong place.

The tall and slender witch who wore a long, velvet gown cinched at the waist by a leather corset, stood at the bottom of the steps that led up into the shop and glowered up at the store front window.

“No real witch would advertise herself in this way!” Emily snapped, practically spitting, and Cole struggled to stop himself from shrinking away from her, reminding himself firmly of his reason for even being there in the first place. This is for Malia.

“Then your outburst has nothing to do with this being the wrong place?” Cole asked, shoving his hands into his jeans pockets to stop anyone from noticing the fact that his fingernails had begun to elongate into thick black claws due to the fact he was so on edge. All he could think about was getting done whatever the hell they had to do to break Malia’s curse and returning to her, returning to find her sitting up in bed with rosy cheeks and a grateful smile upon her face.

Maybe then she will finally agree to go on that date with me, he thought, even though he felt guilty for even thinking it at a time like this. Even if she rejected him all over again, breaking this curse would be worth it just to see her open those beautiful, striking blue eyes again.

“What’s wrong with it?” Cole asked with a shrug, “There are hundreds of these places nowadays.”

“That’s the problem,” Emily snarled, turning a glare on him, and for the first time Cole could see something of Malia’s personality in her. It was clear that they shared the same seriousness and respect when it came to their craft. “Only a handful of the owners who run shops like these actually have the abilities they claim to have.”

“Well, from the state Malia is in back at the manor, I think we found one of the few who does,” Cole pointed out and unable to take the anticipation any longer, he slipped past Emily and began to make his way up the steps noticing a sign in the window that said, Closed for lunch, knock if urgent.

Pulling his hand from his pocket, he was about to knock when Emily arrived at his side. She grabbed hold of his wrist and yanked him out of the way, forcing him to step behind her as she turned to the door and laid her hand on the handle. Though she did so under her breath, Cole could hear her chanting, and a moment later the door practically popped right open.
